Convivial public spaces - Case studies
Created for a class on global urbanism, working with Henry Lau, Amy Liebenberg and Tracy Wilkins, this report looked at case studies of successful and convivial public space projects that engaged broader forces in their respective cities and factored in marginalised and excluded communities for more equitable outcomes. Through these case studies, we identified that successful urban public space projects needed to consider proportionate universalism so that the space welcomes and helps marginalised groups thrive; to start with a community-driven vision to ensure that the resulting space meets users’ needs; and to work towards effectively creating a third place where people can treat as their living room and feel welcome regardless of their positionality and personal context.
In this project, I contributed the case study of the Terras da Costa community kitchen in Lisbon, and led the Introduction and Lessons & Future Directions sections.
